This introductory mosaic course is for children ages 8-16. Mosaic making is taught during the sessions through engaging in a number of connected subject areas from art history through to geography and beyond. 

Alice MacDonnell is an experienced arts educator whose work with the children supplements their school curriculum, whilst through learning mosaic techniques, gives them a practical new skillset and outlook on artistic practice.

**Week 1 to 5** - History of Mosaics 
    
Starting with the incredible story of Pompeii and arguably the most famous mosaic in the world - the Alexander Mosaic. Our course will move on to discussing our own local London history. Inspired by LSOM Thames project, students will choose their own London-inspired design ( underground sign, phone box, pigeon etc) to create over the next 5 weeks. Each lesson will start with being introduced to an exciting mosaic story from the past. From Victorian micro mosaic portraits, to the biggest mosaic in the world being discovered underneath a hotel in Turkey. This course will focus on the importance of mosaics being used as a method of translating social life and stories for civilisations.

**Week 6 to 10 - Mosaics in Architecture **

Our first lesson will be dedicated to the Spanish artist Gaudi and his use of mosaics in his iconic buildings. Inspired by his work, we will be using the idea of recycling materials for our mini masterpieces. This course will also be highlighting mosaics as public art, asking where and how mosaics are used in the modern day. Covering international street artists such as Ememem and 'Invader' , all the way home to London based artist Carrie Reichardt Mosaic house.

**What if I have to miss a class?**

If you have to miss a session on a multi-week course you should speak to the tutor first to arrange for you to make up the time missed. Depending on availability of spaces/tutors  we try to accommodate you. 

**What if I haven't finished my mosaic at the end of the class?**

If you do not manage to complete your mosaic during the duration of the class or course, there are options for you to book/pay for extra studio or tutor time. Please discuss this directly with your tutor. 

**Extra material charges **

If you work with Smalti and Marble exclusively, and at a size larger than 20x20cm an extra charge may apply and the teacher will make you aware of this at the start of your project. The charge depends on the type of material e.g. whether it is recycled or not and  the colour range.
